The historic political shift brings an end to Republican control of both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Voters delivered significant Democratic victories across several states, including traditionally Republican strongholds. The results set the stage for a new balance of power in Washington as President Donald Trump enters the final two years of his second term.

Democrats captured key Senate victories in Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, Iowa, Ohio, North Carolina and Maine, according to election projections. The party also gained enough seats in the House of Representatives to secure a majority, overcoming Republican control established before the election. Concerns surrounding the cost of living, the ongoing war with Iran and government accountability featured prominently among voters, according to election reporting and voter surveys.

The outcome creates a divided federal government, with Democrats preparing to lead Congress while Republicans maintain control of the White House. Democratic leaders will gain greater authority over congressional committees, investigations, federal spending negotiations and legislative priorities. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries is positioned to become Speaker of the House, pending a formal vote when the new Congress convenes. Meanwhile, Republicans will continue to influence federal policy through the presidency, including Trump’s constitutional authority to veto legislation.

Although several congressional races are still undergoing ballot counting and official certification, major news organizations have projected Democratic control of both chambers. The new Congress is scheduled to convene January 3, 2027, beginning a new chapter in American political leadership. SMMC News will continue following the final election results, congressional leadership decisions and the potential impact on federal policy.

For the first time in United States history, five Black governors are set to serve simultaneously following the November 3, 2026, midterm elections. The unprecedented milestone comes after voters elected Black candidates to lead four states and reelected Maryland Governor Wes Moore. The victories represent a historic expansion of Black representation in America’s highest state executive offices. Four of the five governors are Democrats, while one is a Republican.

The five leaders are Wes Moore of Maryland, Keisha Lance Bottoms of Georgia, Byron Donalds of Florida, David Crowley of Wisconsin, and Aaron Ford of Nevada. Bottoms becomes the first Black woman elected governor of any U.S. state, while Donalds becomes the first Black Republican elected governor. Crowley and Ford also make history as the first Black governors elected in Wisconsin and Nevada, respectively.

Before the 2026 elections, only three Black Americans had ever been elected governor: Douglas Wilder of Virginia, Deval Patrick of Massachusetts, and Wes Moore of Maryland. Although other Black governors previously entered office through succession, the country had never experienced five serving simultaneously. The previous record was two, when Patrick and former New York Governor David Paterson served during overlapping terms.

The historic election results mark a new chapter in American political representation, with Black leaders assuming executive authority across multiple regions and political parties. As the incoming governors prepare to take office in 2027, the milestone highlights a significant change in the nation’s political history.

Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has officially made history after winning Georgia’s 2026 gubernatorial election. The Democratic candidate defeated Republican businessman Rick Jackson in Tuesday’s November 3 election. Bottoms becomes the first Black woman elected governor of a U.S. state. Her victory also makes her the first woman elected governor in Georgia’s history.

Bottoms previously served as Atlanta’s mayor from 2018 to 2022 and later held senior positions in former President Joe Biden’s administration. Her election marks a historic shift in Georgia politics, with Democrats reclaiming the governor’s office after more than two decades of Republican leadership.

Throughout her campaign, Bottoms emphasized expanding Medicaid, improving access to healthcare, supporting working families, and strengthening voting rights. Her opponent, Rick Jackson, campaigned on tax reductions, economic development, public safety, and reducing government regulations.

The historic outcome represents a major milestone in American political representation, particularly for Black women who have long sought greater representation in statewide executive leadership. Bottoms is set to succeed outgoing Republican Governor Brian Kemp.

A 15-year-old boy has tragically lost his life after being shot while walking to school in the Bronx on Thursday morning, October 29. Authorities identified the victim as Javits Frimpong, who was shot in the abdomen near East 171st Street in the Claremont neighborhood shortly before 9:30 a.m. The teenager was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The NYPD is searching for three teenagers believed to be connected to the shooting as investigators work to establish a motive.

Frimpong’s father, Thomas Frimpong, believes his son’s death may be connected to bullying he had experienced at school. According to his father, Javits had repeatedly reported harassment to school administrators, and two students were reportedly suspended shortly before the shooting. A school bus attendant also told CBS News New York that he was aware of the suspensions. However, police have not confirmed any connection between the bullying allegations and the fatal shooting.

Javits moved to New York from Ghana approximately one year ago, hoping to build a better future in the United States. His father described him as a quiet, intelligent teenager who attended school regularly and dreamed of becoming a physician. Surveillance footage reportedly captured the moments surrounding the shooting, showing a teenager fleeing while another individual pursued him. The killing has left his family and members of the Bronx community mourning a young life cut tragically short.

As of Friday, October 30, no arrests have been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing. Police are urging anyone with information to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline. While the family continues searching for answers, authorities have not publicly established whether Javits was specifically targeted or why the shooting occurred.

The 28-year-old quarterback’s condition was confirmed Monday in a joint statement from the Eagles and his agent, Nicole Lynn. Hurts was initially diagnosed with a superficial blood clot in his left calf before the team’s October 11 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. Further medical examinations revealed a more serious condition involving blood clots in his lungs. The development represents a significant setback for Philadelphia as the organization prioritizes its quarterback’s recovery.

According to the team’s medical update, Hurts remains clinically stable and is not experiencing significant functional limitations. His treatment is expected to involve anticoagulant medication, commonly known as blood thinners. While receiving treatment, Hurts will be prohibited from participating in contact sports, including professional football. Medical professionals anticipate a full recovery without long-term complications. However, the treatment requirements make a return during the current NFL season unlikely.

The Eagles previously placed Hurts on injured reserve after additional testing raised concerns about the movement of the original blood clot. Backup quarterback Tanner McKee started Sunday’s matchup against the Carolina Panthers, which Philadelphia lost 25–14. The defeat dropped the Eagles to a 2–4 record following their fourth consecutive loss. Philadelphia now faces the challenge of rebuilding offensive consistency without its franchise quarterback. Head coach Nick Sirianni has emphasized the organization’s commitment to Hurts’ health and safety.

The selloff affected several major technology companies, including Micron Technology, whose shares fell 5.6%, and Intel, which declined 5.8%. Advanced Micro Devices also dropped approximately 6%, while Broadcom lost 4.5%. The declines contributed to a difficult week for technology stocks, with the Nasdaq falling 4.5% over the five-day trading period. The broader S&P 500 declined 1.1% on Friday, reflecting the impact of technology-sector weakness across the U.S. stock market.

Investors have become increasingly concerned about the substantial borrowing and infrastructure spending required to support artificial intelligence development, including the construction of large data centers and the purchase of advanced computer chips. Although AI remains a major focus of corporate investment, questions surrounding financing costs, future demand, and profitability have increased pressure on technology shares. The latest market decline highlights the uncertainty facing companies seeking to turn rapid AI expansion into sustainable financial returns.
