Award-winning actress Cynthia Erivo is officially joining the cast of Universal Pictures’ upcoming Snoop Dogg biographical film, Snoop. Erivo will portray Afeni Shakur, the mother of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur. The casting introduces another major name to a production exploring the life and career of one of hip-hop’s most influential entertainers. Universal Pictures confirmed the announcement on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.

The film stars Jonathan Daviss as Snoop Dogg, with Camron Jones portraying Tupac Shakur and Lauren London taking on the role of Snoop’s mother, Beverly Tate. Directed by Craig Brewer, the production will explore Calvin Broadus Jr.’s journey from his early years in Long Beach, California, to international music stardom. Snoop Dogg is also serving as a producer, and the film will feature music from his extensive catalog.

Erivo’s portrayal of Afeni Shakur brings an important historical figure into the story. A former Black Panther Party activist, Afeni played a significant role in Tupac’s life and inspired his celebrated song “Dear Mama.” Filming is underway in Southern California, with Snoop scheduled to arrive in theaters on August 6, 2027.
