New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has ordered a comprehensive review of the New York Police Department’s use-of-force policies, marking the department’s first major examination of those guidelines in approximately a decade. The announcement comes amid growing demands for police accountability, heightened scrutiny of law enforcement practices, and increasing political pressure surrounding Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch’s leadership of the nation’s largest police department.

The mayor announced the initiative Monday, outlining plans to examine how NYPD officers use force during encounters with civilians. The review will include input from community organizations and residents, increased funding for the department’s independent inspector general, and additional measures aimed at strengthening accountability when officers are accused of misconduct. The decision follows criticism surrounding several high-profile police shootings, including the 2024 death of 19-year-old Win Rozario during a mental health crisis.

The announcement has also intensified disagreements over the future of policing in New York City. Progressive organizations are demanding stronger reforms, while police union representatives argue that the proposed changes could undermine officer morale and public safety. Mamdani continues to face pressure from political allies to remove Commissioner Jessica Tisch, particularly following the recent federal immigration shooting in Marble Hill. Despite those demands, the mayor’s administration has maintained that Tisch will remain in her position as the city prepares to examine its policing policies.
