TAMPA BAY RAYS TAKE 3–2 ALCS LEAD AS CLEVELAND GUARDIANS FACE ELIMINATION
The Tampa Bay Rays moved within one victory of the World Series after defeating the Cleveland Guardians 3–1 on Sunday, October 18. The victory gave Tampa Bay a 3–2 lead in the American League Championship Series. Game 5 was played at Progressive Field in Cleveland. The teams entered the matchup having split the first four games of the series. Tampa Bay now has the opportunity to secure the American League pennant at home.
SMMC SPORTS REPORT
Starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen delivered a commanding performance for the Rays. Rasmussen allowed one run across seven innings while limiting Cleveland to four hits and one walk. He also recorded six strikeouts during the outing. Tampa Bay established an early three-run advantage and protected that lead throughout the contest. The Guardians struggled to generate consistent offense against Rasmussen and the Rays' bullpen.
Cleveland's pitching staff managed to keep the game competitive after the early innings. However, the Guardians were unable to overcome Tampa Bay's advantage. The victory placed additional pressure on Cleveland entering the remainder of the championship series. Tampa Bay is seeking its third American League pennant in franchise history. The team's previous World Series appearances came in 2008 and 2020.
Game 6 is scheduled for Monday, October 19, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Guardians must win to extend their season. Tampa Bay can advance with one additional victory. A seventh game would be played Tuesday if Cleveland forces a deciding contest. The Milwaukee Brewers await the American League champion in the 2026 World Series.
