NEW YORK LIBERTY ELIMINATED AS ANGEL REESE LEADS ATLANTA DREAM TO FIRST WNBA FINALS SINCE 2013
Updated: Oct 10
The New York Liberty's pursuit of another WNBA championship ended Friday night following a heartbreaking 85–83 defeat against the Atlanta Dream at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The loss completed a three-game sweep in the WNBA semifinals, sending Atlanta to the championship round for the first time in 13 years. Despite playing in front of an energized New York crowd, the Liberty were unable to overcome Atlanta's late-game execution, bringing a disappointing conclusion to a season that carried significant expectations.
Atlanta star Angel Reese delivered another impressive playoff performance, finishing with 22 points, while Rhyne Howard contributed 21 points to help secure the victory. New York received outstanding contributions from Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones, who scored 26 points apiece. The Liberty briefly gained momentum during the third quarter before Atlanta responded with stronger defensive pressure. New York had an opportunity to tie the contest in the closing seconds, but Stewart missed a contested layup, allowing the Dream to preserve their lead.
The victory represents a remarkable achievement for Atlanta, which entered the postseason determined to establish itself among the league's elite teams. Reese has emerged as a central figure in the Dream's championship pursuit, combining physical rebounding, defensive intensity and consistent scoring. The team will now prepare to face the Golden State Valkyries in the WNBA Finals beginning October 17. Both franchises will be competing for their first WNBA championship, guaranteeing an important new chapter in league history.
For New York, the elimination creates an offseason filled with questions about roster development and championship expectations. The Liberty returned much of the talent that helped deliver the franchise's first title in 2024 but struggled with consistency during the 2026 campaign. Although the team produced an impressive first-round playoff upset, it could not maintain that momentum against Atlanta. The organization must now evaluate what changes are necessary to return to championship contention as the WNBA continues growing in competitiveness and popularity.
